My memory holds that this was a pretty lame show, even for the time period. Starts off pretty good with Bucket/Sugaree/All Over Now. Candyman is always welcome. Being hopeful the band would push the energy further for the second set, the China/Rider (always a combo that got things moving) disappointed....in a big way. Then to follow with Women, Corinna, Last Time, Fought the Law encore? Boo! They were the turds on the turd sandwich. Sorry, just didn't feel it for this one, but the next night was probably my favorite of 94. Goes to show....

Given the vintage, this isn't a bad show, but there's almost nothing here worth returning to. The Jack Straw>Sugaree gets the show going with real promise, but the rest of the show suffers from unexciting song selection and energy levels that never rise above passable.

Part of the problem is the song selections and placement. Easy Answers to close the first set, a slow Crazy Fingers into Corrina in the mid second-set position and the overplayed Last Time out of Space didn't get the audience going. There's some nice

The first and last nights of this Eugene run are worth seeking out, but you're not missing anything by skipping this one.

Subject: Deadheads don't know what good music is
For commentary on this show as a whole, see the 16 bit AUD copy.

I read the previous reviews of this copy before I listened (although I attended this show, I don't really remember it). One or two Heads, in true cult fashion, parroted the predictable language pattern: "Candyman good, Easy Answers bad". Specifically, the first set was cited as being "high"-energy, or something like that, up until Easy Answers, when the energy was supposed to have sank in some way.

In fact, Garcia is dragging his ass through pretty much the whole first set. Tennessee Jed, while not as horrible as the one in Seattle, is erratic and annoyingly flubbed, and Candyman is as boring as I've ever heard it...and I'm a Garcia fan, folks. In contrast, Weir is whooping it up mightily, putting on a good show pretty much right along, and no one who is listening with an open mind (unpolluted by the mandatory mantra that Weir is always cheesy & Garcia is always real) can fail to hear the remarkable JUMP in energy that occurs between Candyman & Easy Answers. Immediately, I go from yawning to dancing.

Cheesy? Really?! Easy Answers is a SERIOUS song with a serious motown-funk groove; it's tight and it f--king ROCKS. Music is not a religion or a political system, folks: it's artistic expression & entertainment. You don't have to hate Bob Weir, and you don't have to praise Jerry Garcia when he doesn't deserve it. Heck, you don't HAVE to do anything, but I do wish you would shut off the internal dialogue you stole from the Head who spoke before you, and just LISTEN.

I was at all three nights of this run and a fine time was had by all. This is the weakest of the three shows but it still has some highlights.
From what I remember it was a picture perfect day weatherwise, and being these were afternoon shows we had beautiful sunshine throughout the show.
The Jack Straw is solid but not mindblowing. While I wouldn't rank this Sugaree among the best all time(3-18-77 5-11-77), it is still a very good version with Jerry strumming fuiously at points, and also using sustain on some notes as well. The rest of the first set is pretty above average for 94, which aint sayin much, Jerry was on the downward spiral by this point. Candyman is a rare treat. Cheesy Answers to close the first set was crappy as usual. That song sucks!
The China>Rider to open the second set is like the Jack Straw, solid but uninspiring. You could say that about this whole show, solid but uninspiring. The Corrina, like the Cheesy Answers, is rough stuff, especially the harmonies and the mind numbing repetition of the chorus. The rest of the show is pretty lackluster. Jerry mangles the last verse of Days Between so bad that he has to try it 2 or 3 times.
4 stars for sound and 2 and a half for the show.
If you want to hear the best of what Eugene 94 has to offer check the Rain>Eyes, Saint and Wheel>Attics from the first night(6-17) or the entire second set from the third (6-19).

Subject: decent show for the bays between
Good days between for the later years. 2 to three stars and since its the dead we will be generous and say.... three stars.

I don't fluff my ratings. Actually, screw it- it would be an insult to the great 69 and 73 shows,. Days between is the gold here; the rest is pedestrian. 2 stars. Sorry! If only I could rate it two and a half I would but I won't CHEAT the rating systems. :) Take care.

Hey Benjamin,
Try the 6-25-91 Sugaree, I prefer it to this one significantly!

It's pretty funny hearing Jerry and Bob yelling "Corrina" back and forth to eachother and band when they had that nifty little in-ear monitor system where the whole band could speak to eachother without the crowd hearing a thing. Kinda makes ya chuckle like when Jerry would flub up the lyrics even after he had a teleprompter.

I have up-ed my rating for this to a low 4. I really enjoy this show much more now than I did in person.

Sound quality is excellent.

Subject: sugaree to end all
This first set kicks ass, and makes this a good download. I never heard a sugaree this good. Jerry had the blue hawaii slack key style and milked it for all it was worth. It was pretty hot in the bowl and folks were dancing hard. Phil just thundering on MAMU and Maggies Farm. Then came easy answers which was like a blow to the stomache. Pretty disappointing to see such high energy go south so fast.
